Risk Taking for Women in Leadership
Jan 09, 2024
So many times I hear, “Hey, step out of your comfort zone.”
Guess what. I don’t want to step out of my comfort zone, and really what you are asking is for me to step into YOUR comfort zone. I am a risk taker, so my comfort zone gets stretched with my natural tendencies, and I am good at taking risks and dealing with the consequences. What I really need in risk-taking is for YOU to step out of your comfort zone. Have you ever thought about asking that of those who ask you to be a risk-taker?
How about the differences between men and women in risk-taking? There are some generally based on gender differences that can be influenced by biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Note - these generalizations do not necessarily apply to everyone.
The socialization of gender roles plays a role here. Men are often encouraged to be brave and assertive, while women may be nudged toward caution and conformity. Men feel more pressure to take risks and women may be more cautious. Men, generally having higher levels of testosterone, might exhibit a stronger appetite for risk and sensation-seeking behaviors. On the other hand, women often adopt a more long-term perspective in decision-making, weighing the potential consequences and seeking stability over time.
Contextually, men may be more competitive and take risks whereas women may emphasize collaboration and seek social support before taking a risk.
Recognizing these tendencies is important, but oversimplification doesn’t do justice to the complexity of risk-taking behaviors. Men and women exhibit a broad spectrum of behaviors and attitudes toward risk. It’s important to understand that our approach to risk stems from our unique experiences and values.
I have found I am very willing to take risks, my way. And I am betting that is a consistent quality for everyone, regardless of gender.
So... Stop asking me to step into your comfort zone, and consider stepping into mine. It’s time we redefine risk-taking as a one-size-fits-all challenge but as a personalized journey. Embrace risk in a way that aligns with your individuality and understands that your comfort zone is as unique as you are.
